I’ve received a few messages and comments about my position regarding the Port Perry Fairgrounds. I understand that the positions of the candidates could very well be the deciding factor for most voters. I thought I should post my comments and thoughts on the issue, so any potential voters in Ward 2 understand where I stand.
I've read all the Facebook comments and have been actively listening closely to residents, and one thing is clear: our residents care deeply about this space. I believe the Fairgrounds should remain in the hands of the public and should not be sold for private development.- Keep the Fairgrounds as a publicly owned space.
- Support the Port Perry Fair and our agricultural heritage.
- Unlock the Fairgrounds' potential as a year-round community asset.
- Support thoughtful improvements that make the Fairgrounds more useful and accessible for residents of all ages and interests.
The Port Perry Fairgrounds are more than just a piece of property - they are a part of our community's history, identity, and future. I remember looking forward to the Port Perry Fair every year as a kid, as did my own son, despite it also signaling a return to school.
I understand that many residents have been frustrated by the uncertainty of the Fairgrounds' future and that they want a clear commitment that this important part of our history will be protected. I share that view.
At the same time, I appreciate that we have an opportunity to think creatively about how this valuable community resource can better serve our residents year-round. We can work together to preserve what makes the Fairgrounds special while exploring improvements and amenities that benefit our residents of all ages and interests.
My position is simple:
By preserving the Fairgrounds and enhancing their use, we can ensure this important community space continues to serve residents well into the future.
