Resident Question: “What are your thoughts are on our Heritage program to preserve Heritage properties in Scugog?”

I think preserving Scugog’s heritage is important. Our historic buildings and properties are part of what gives our communities their character and tells the story of where we came from.

At the same time, I think there needs to be a balance between preservation and the rights and responsibilities of individual property owners. Heritage designation shouldn’t become an unreasonable financial or administrative burden for someone who owns a designated property.

I’d like to see the Township continue to work with property owners to find practical ways to preserve our heritage, including making sure there is clear information, support and, where appropriate, financial incentives available. I also think decisions about designation and preservation should be made carefully and with meaningful input from the property owners and the community.

Ultimately, I’m supportive of protecting the parts of Scugog’s history that make our communities unique, but I believe we need to do it in a way that is practical, sustainable and fair.
