I recently received an email from a Ward 2 resident asking the following two questions:
1) As the sole public library in the region providing a wide range of services for all ages, do you have a specific position on future investment for this community hub? (i.e. status quo, opportunities for new resources, review for 'efficiencies'?)
2) In the short time we've lived here, we've noticed quite a bit of petty crimes from vandalism, reported thefts, to night disturbances in terms of public nuisance/trespassing. I'm not sure I've heard our current councillor say a word on these incidents. Wondering if you have thoughts on responding to this issue?
The following was my response:
With respect to the Scugog Memorial Public Library, I recognize its importance as a community hub that provides valuable services and resources to residents of all ages. I support maintaining accessible, quality library services while exploring opportunities to enhance programming and resources where there is a demonstrated community need. As with all municipal services, I believe investments should be evaluated through responsible budgeting, long-term planning, and consideration of their benefits to residents.
Regarding petty crime, vandalism, and public disturbances, I share your concerns. While policing falls under the jurisdiction of Durham Regional Police, I believe Council has a responsibility to advocate for residents, communicate concerns to the appropriate authorities, and work collaboratively to identify solutions. This includes ensuring residents know where to report incidents and following up on recurring issues affecting neighbourhood safety.
