The short answer is no.
I’ve heard some discussion during this campaign suggesting that living in the Ward you represent could create conflicts of interest. In Ontario, that’s generally not how municipal conflict-of-interest rules work.
A conflict of interest typically arises when a Councillor has a direct financial interest in a matter before Council. This conflict would arise no matter what Ward you were representing. Simply living in a Ward, paying taxes there, using local roads and parks, or being affected by community issues in the same way as other residents does not create a conflict.
In fact, most Ward Councillors across Ontario live in the Wards they represent. If living in your Ward automatically created a conflict, Councillors would have difficulty representing the very communities that elected them.
For me, living in Ward 2 is an advantage. It means I experience the same roads, services, parks, and local issues that many of you do every day. I believe that firsthand knowledge helps a Councillor better understand residents’ concerns and advocate effectively on their behalf. I also think it's very important to have a physical presence in the Ward. I’m always out walking in Ward 2, and my hope would be that you feel you can wave me down to have a conversation, ask a question, or let me know a concern you have.
